What are you afraid of when it comes to your creative projects? How do you overcome your fears and reservations and follow your dreams?
Fear is something pretty much all creatives and makers deal with at some point. The important thing is to do the work to look within yourself and answer the questions above so you can move past it.
In my January 2021 appearance on Linda Riesenberg Fisler’s Art Chat podcast, we shed light on our own fears and challenges, and offer our insights on how to push through and just get the work done.

To be transparent in the hope that if you can relate it’ll make you feel better, here are some of the fears I’ve experienced:
- What will someone (usually a specific person, which varies) think?
- Am I good enough to (fill in the blank)?
- Will this project be a success?
The answer to each of these is worth its own blog post, but in short…
- Who cares what “so-and-so” thinks? My m/o is to not do anything I would personally regret, so if you believe it and it’s not harming anyone else, then it’s probably worth doing (within reason, people! I have to say that because it’s 2021 and the world is going insane.)
- Yes, you’re good enough. The fact that you’re questioning this shows that you’re invested, so if you need to, get better. Find a mentor, take a class, read a book, and practice practice practice whatever it is you’re into.
- Maybe your project will be a success. Maybe it won’t. This depends on how you define success and if you’ve enjoyed or benefited from the process itself.
The fears I’ve shared here are related to creative writing, performance arts, and other random endeavors I’ve pursued. What fears do you have? Listen to the podcast above and share your thoughts in the comments section. I’d love to hear from you.
Peace, love, and courage,
Cherie Dawn
