How Often Do You Do It?

An excerpt from LifeSoup, August 2023

Recently for work, I was interviewing an artist, Bill Davidson, who encountered a large bear while he was painting on location. Once we navigated our conversation through how he handled it (watch our Q&A and see his photos here), we drifted into the realm of general creativity. He kindly asked about my writing life and inquired if I write every day.

“No,” I apologetically answered. I have my day job, I explained, along with my family, three dogs, 13 chickens, a vineyard that I’ve all but ignored this year, and I’m in a six-month yoga training combined with an additional Thai Yoga Massage training (more on that soon, friends!). I also regularly teach yoga classes. It’s safe to say that my writing has shifted to the back burner – temporarily. I take comfort in knowing that at least my day job as an editor is in line with my soul-calling as a writer and it inspires artists every day.

Maybe you can relate to having a laundry list of “to-do’s.” That’s okay – we have a life to live, and that life is full of things we need and want to tend to at various times, so don’t feel bad… (sign up for the LifeSoup newsletter here so you don’t miss future messages like this!)

Featured Photo: This is me, working on my novel draft while traveling with my son during his All-State music trip in February ’23. It’s common for me to write while on a trip because I’m a natural early bird… somebody’s got to feed the chickens and dogs every morning! Make or find the time, and also be flexible when you can’t.
