National Poetry Month - Cherie Dawn Haas LifeSoup blog

In honor of National Poetry Month, I’ll share with you a poem from my 2020 collection, “Personified.”

Normally calm and relaxed,
The moment you elude me
I lose all sense of peace
Anger replaces my creativity
Take a breath and start anew, I remind myself.
Alone, I can practice yoga
Nuzzle dogs, completely unaware
Watch the sun’s elusive heat
burn off the remaining frost,
coating the trees like
powdered sugar — which reminds me —
I can bake.
The only thing to do for now
Is ignore my craving to look for you.
Are you back? Should I call?
Always the question — why did you disappear?
Always when we’re in the middle of something.
My first reaction is that you’re wasting my time
Then, slowly, as I move and snuggle and watch and bake
I remember that you are giving me time
Human acts begin to dominate my mind
Before I realize it — hours pass and I almost forget
To open my laptop and check for the internet.

I recently met with my dear friend (and amazing editor), Lauren, to hand over my near-final draft of what will become my second novel, “Ashes for William.” I promise to keep you posted on the progress ~ once I make final revisions, I’ll begin sending queries to literary agents in hopes to find the right match.

I’m also in the process of building a she-shed / office / writing room / yoga space. This is a dream come true, and I’ll be sharing more on the process for this later as well. Why? Because if I can do it, then I believe you can, too ~ whatever your “it” is.

Stay inspired,
Cherie Dawn
