There are times when the stars line up and everything comes into place to allow you to have a perfect yoga practice or meditation. By perfect, I mean that there are no interruptions in sight and no hard cut-off times, and you have a quiet space.
But how often does that happen for the average person? Probably not often enough. (To be honest, that’s one of the many reasons that I like to practice in a studio class – it’s one hour that you can leave your phone and everything that comes with it.)
You can also learn to carve out little moments throughout the week for both mindfulness practices and creativity. For example, I keep a tiny notebook in my purse for unexpected ideas that arise for my writing projects or work, and I often practice simple breathing exercises while “on the go.”
When I found myself waiting for one of my sons to come out from a music rehearsal, I used the time to enjoy the present moment in my parked car. As I controlled my inhales and exhales, the wind outside reminded me that there’s something bigger out there.
Go ahead and take a deep breath right now. Don’t worry; you can be subtle if you happen to be in public. If it feels good, repeat it at least two more times.
Here’s a short video that I made while in my car* that day. It’s a guided meditation of sorts to help you practice mindfulness, no matter where you are.
Stay well,
Cherie Dawn
*Friends, making this video pushed me out of my comfort zone; I was in a relatively public space, and now it’s out there on the interwebs. I want to point this out to encourage you to do the same – push yourself a little further toward your dreams and goals. In this example, my goal is to be a source of peace (“a lamp, a bridge, or healing medicine”) for others, but I can’t do that by sitting alone in my basement just thinking about it.
Make your mark on the world.
