How to make air-popped popcorn - easy

Or, “How I Discovered How to Make Air-Popped Popcorn” > Sometimes I can be a little dense. It’s an endearing part of my personality, or at least I like to think so. My husband even has a cute way of acknowledging when I do something silly…he says, “That’s my Cherie!” We joke that it could be the title of a sitcom.

I recently began looking for air-popped popcorn when I learned how much healthier it is than even “light” microwave popcorn. (Truth be told, I rejoined Weight Watchers recently and saw that this is zero points on the plan I’m on – yay!) The problem was that I didn’t know that you buy plain kernels to make air-popped popcorn, and then you pop it yourself. I spent way too much time in aisle 12 looking for something I’d never find. :p

Long story short, my cousin’s wife, Aimee B., enlightened me. I wrote a Facebook asking friends and family if anyone had a popcorn maker they weren’t using anymore because it seems like one of those things that you buy and then let sit in your pantry for years. (I’m all about cutting back on new products and instead try to reduce the need for new products as much as possible.)

Aimee told me this “game-changer” for making low-fat air-popped popcorn, and it is no joke.

How To Make Air-Popped Popcorn:

  • Buy plain popcorn kernels.
  • Put them in a paper lunch bag.
  • Microwave it.

That’s it, friends. I’ll show you the actual steps with more details here:

How to make air-popped popcorn - measure kernels
Measure 1/4 cup of kernels. I used yellow, but you can also buy white kernels.
How to make popcorn in a paper bag
Put the kernels (no oil or butter) in a lunch-sized paper bag. You can even reuse the bag a few times. Fold the top over several times. Microwave the bag; choose the “popcorn” button if you have one on your microwave, or just go for about two minutes and listen for the popping to stop.
Seasonings for air-popped popcorn flavors
When the popcorn is finished, give it a few sprays of what I call “not butter” and a dash of salt. Mix it with a light touch, and give it another spray/dash. I’ve been using this Lavender Sea Salt, but the flavoring options are endless – you can try a dry ranch powder or cinnamon sugar …go wild here! Weight Watchers offers several flavors as well, and I plan to try them soon.
How to make air-popped popcorn in the microwave
The 1/4 cup of kernels makes about four cups of air-popped popcorn.

Give it a try and let me know how it turns out for you, including what seasonings you use! Just post it on Instagram and tag me with @cheriedawnhaas and #lifesoupblog.

Also, just for fun – this butter summarizes the way my mind spins in existential questions…
